When a child enters the foster care system because of abuse or neglect, life can change quickly. The child may leave home, change schools, live with unfamiliar adults, and meet a growing number of caseworkers, attorneys, service providers, and court officials. During this uncertain time, CASA Kane County helps ensure the child’s needs and best interests do not get lost in the system.
CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocate. CASA Kane County recruits, trains, and supervises community volunteers who are appointed by a judge to advocate for children involved in abuse, neglect, or private guardianship cases.
A CASA/GAL volunteer takes time to understand the child’s individual circumstances. The volunteer visits the child regularly, listens to their concerns, reviews records, and speaks with parents, foster caregivers, teachers, counselors, medical professionals, caseworkers, and others involved in the child’s life.
Using this information, the volunteer provides the court with an objective view of how the child is doing and what services, support, or placement may best meet their needs. CASA volunteers may advocate for educational assistance, appropriate medical or mental health care, sibling contact, stable placements, and progress toward a safe, permanent home.
While many adults may enter and leave a child’s life during a court case, the CASA volunteer can remain a consistent presence from appointment through case closure. That reliability can help a child feel heard, supported, and less alone during an overwhelming experience.
CASA volunteers do not replace caseworkers, attorneys, or foster families. Instead, they work alongside them while focusing specifically on the child’s best interests and helping the judge make well-informed decisions.
CASA Kane County’s goal is simple but essential: every child deserves safety, stability, and the opportunity to thrive, no matter what circumstances brought them into care. Learn more about CASA’s mission, becoming a volunteer, or supporting its work at casakanecounty.org.
